“Reflect on your behaviors and how they impact your life and relationships. This self-awareness lays the foundation for personal growth.”
- Ludovica Colella, CBT Therapist
The word personality comes from the Latin word ‘persona’, which refers to masks worn by performers in theatres to disguise their identities to play certain roles. In real life we also have to wear disguises to execute agendas we have set for ourselves. A person’s distinctive personality is a combination of unique characteristics or qualities. An individual’s unique thoughts, actions and feelings separate them from the others. Your personality keeps altering throughout life, according to your environment. Though consistency is good, it is beneficial to keep enhancing your personality as life goes on to fit into certain roles and fulfill your responsibilities.
The practice of developing, altering, and enhancing one’s personality over time is called Personality Development. Though this process takes place naturally throughout one’s life, it can also be affected by deliberate efforts. Environment, genetics, parenting, and social variables are some of the factors that impact personality development. Life experiences can also influence personality development in both negative and positive ways. It is us who decide how to make the best of our life lessons and incorporate them into our personality.
You gain a positive attitude towards life because of personality development. An increase in confidence and self-esteem appears as a result of this process. One’s communication skills are enhanced, and their interpretation of the world is positively impacted. Both personal and professional growth are influenced by personality development. Working on your interpersonal skills can assist you with your struggle to interact and have conversations with unfamiliar people. Personally, you will be able to connect with people better and professionally you will be disciplined to work in a team, which makes you quite valuable to the organization you are working for. Hence, personality development is essential for both personal and professional growth.
There are many ways in which you can improvise your personality development, such as practicing self-care, self-assessment, keeping journal, setting short-term and long-term goals, getting out of your comfort zone, revealing your creative skills, finding yourself a suitable mentor. These practices can help you shape an appealing personality and face any challenge life throws at you with a positive attitude and a smile on your face.
